Val XUEYI Yang
Val(Xueyi) Yang is a multidisciplinary artist and designer working at the intersection of natural science, computation, and cultural storytelling. Born and raised in China and now based in New York. She navigates hybrid identities and methodologies to question dominant narratives and foreground overlooked perspectives—particularly those rooted in indigenous knowledge, embodied labor, and microbial life.
Val’s work reflects a deep inquiry into the dichotomies often imposed between nature and technology, Western science and ancestral wisdom, private and public, soft and hard. She dissolves these binaries to propose a more holistic, plural understanding of knowledge and creative practice. Often drawing from her own lived experiences as a woman of color and migrant, her installations and performances offer space for marginalized narratives to emerge and mutate into new forms of power, care, and agency.
Her practice draws from a wide range of media, including bio-sculpture, data visualization, recipe making, AI systems, and scientific experimentation. With a background in Communication Design from Parsons School of Design, Val re-engaged with microbiology and biomaterials through encounters with mycology and fermentation, leading her toward what she describes as a cross-species, cross-disciplinary dialogue. By working with both organic and computational systems—mycelium, genome sequences, artificial intelligence, microbial fermentation—she creates works that explore how knowledge is produced, preserved, and embodied across human and nonhuman systems.
